Magnetic Particle Testing
Magnetic particle testing (MPT) is a non-destructive method for detecting cracks and other discontinuities on the surface and subsurface of ferromagnetic materials. It is highly sensitive and provides immediate visual indications.
Service Details
When a ferromagnetic material is magnetized, discontinuities that lie transverse to the direction of magnetization cause distortion of the magnetic lines of flux. A leakage field is formed at or above the surface. Finely divided magnetic particles are applied to the surface, and these particles are attracted to the leakage field, forming an outline of the discontinuity. This reveals the location, shape, and extent of the defect.
The sensitivity of detection is maximum at the surface and diminishes rapidly with increasing depth of subsurface defects.
Factors Affecting Magnetic Particle Testing
• Direction and strength of the magnetic field
• Magnetic character of the part
• Location and orientation of discontinuities
• Type of magnetic powder applied (dry or wet, visible or fluorescent)
Magnetization Methods
• Electromagnetic Yoke – Portable method for field and shop use
• Prod Method – High current passed through prods in contact with the part
• Wet Horizontal Equipment – Stationary unit for mass production components
• Coils and Solenoids – For magnetizing long or cylindrical parts
• Central Conductors – For internal surface inspection of hollow parts
Types of Magnetic Particles
• Dry Visible Particles – Colored powders viewed under white light
• Wet Visible Particles – Particles suspended in oil or water, viewed under white light
• Wet Fluorescent Particles – Particles viewed under UV light (black light) for high sensitivity
