Ultrasonic Testing
Ultrasonic testing (UT) is a non-destructive method that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws, measure material thickness, and characterize material properties. It is highly sensitive to planar discontinuities such as cracks, lack of fusion, and laminations.
Service Details
In ultrasonic testing, a transducer generates high-frequency sound waves (typically 0.5 to 25 MHz) that are introduced into the test material. The sound waves travel through the material and reflect back from any internal discontinuities, boundaries, or the back wall. The reflected signals (echoes) are displayed on a screen, allowing the inspector to determine the location, size, and nature of the discontinuity.
Ultrasonic Testing Methods
• Pulse-Echo Method – The same transducer sends and receives sound waves. Most commonly used.
• Through-Transmission Method – Separate transducers send and receive sound waves.
• Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) – Multiple elements create steerable and focused beams.
• Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) – Measures diffracted sound waves for precise crack sizing.
Common Discontinuities Detected
• Cracks and lack of fusion
• Laminations and delaminations
• Porosity and inclusions
• Corrosion and wall thinning
• Bond line defects in composites
Applications
Ultrasonic testing is used in:
• Weld inspection (structural, pipeline, and pressure vessel welds)
• Thickness measurement for corrosion monitoring
• Forging and casting inspection
• Aerospace component inspection
• Rail and axle inspection
Our Ultrasonic Testing Capabilities
Our facility is equipped with:
• Portable conventional ultrasonic flaw detectors
• Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) systems
• Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) systems
• Ultrasonic thickness gauges with A-scan and B-scan display
