Ultrasonic Thickness Testing
Ultrasonic thickness testing (UTT) is a non-destructive method used to measure the thickness of materials by transmitting high-frequency sound waves through the test object. It is the most reliable technique for monitoring corrosion, erosion, and wall thinning.
Service Details
An ultrasonic thickness gauge generates a sound pulse that travels through the material and reflects back from the opposite surface (back wall). The time taken for the sound wave to travel through the material and return is measured. The gauge then calculates the thickness based on the known sound velocity of the material.
Ultrasonic thickness testing requires access to only one side of the material, making it ideal for in-service inspections of tanks, pipes, and pressure vessels.
Ultrasonic Thickness Testing Methods
• Single Echo Mode – Measures time between the initial pulse and the first back wall echo.
• Echo-to-Echo Mode – Measures time between two successive back wall echoes, ignoring surface coatings.
• Thru-Coating Mode – Eliminates errors caused by protective coatings.
• A-Scan Display – Shows the full waveform for verification of readings.
• B-Scan Display – Provides a cross-sectional profile of the test piece.
Applications
Ultrasonic thickness testing is used for:
• Corrosion and erosion monitoring in pipelines
• Wall thickness measurement of storage tanks and pressure vessels
• Boiler tube and heat exchanger inspection
• Ship hull and marine structure thickness assessment
• Quality control during manufacturing
