Visual Testing
Visual testing (VT) is the most basic and essential non-destructive testing method. It involves direct visual examination of a component or material to detect surface discontinuities, misalignment, dimensional errors, and other visible defects. Visual testing is the first step in any inspection process and is often required before other NDT methods are applied.
Service Details
Visual testing uses the human eye, either directly or with optical aids, to examine the surface of a test object. It can detect discontinuities that are open to the surface, such as cracks, porosity, corrosion, and welding defects. Proper lighting, cleaning, and access are essential for effective visual inspection.
Visual testing can be performed:
• Direct Visual – The inspector's eye is within 24 inches of the test surface with normal vision (20/20) or corrected with glasses.
• Remote Visual – The inspector uses cameras, borescopes, fiberscopes, or video scopes to view areas that are inaccessible to direct vision.
Common Discontinuities Detected by Visual Testing
• Surface cracks and fissures
• Porosity and pinholes
• Undercutting, overlap, and excessive reinforcement in welds
• Corrosion, pitting, and rust
• Misalignment and dimensional errors
• Surface contamination and foreign material
• Incomplete penetration and lack of fusion (when surface-breaking)
• Spatter, arc strikes, and burn-through
Optical Aids Used in Visual Testing
• Magnifying glasses and loupes (2x to 10x magnification)
• Borescopes and fiberscopes for internal surfaces
• Video scopes with recording capability
• Endoscopes for small-diameter openings
• Measuring scales, weld gauges, and templates
• Mirrors and prisms for restricted access areas
Applications
Visual testing is used in virtually all industries, including:
• Weld inspection before, during, and after welding
• Casting and forging surface examination
• In-service equipment inspection for corrosion and damage
• Pre-cleaning verification before other NDT methods
• Final assembly and quality control
• Maintenance and overhaul inspections
Our Visual Testing Capabilities
Our visual testing services include:
• Direct visual inspection with proper lighting and magnification
• Remote visual inspection using portable video scopes
• Weld inspection using AWS-compatible weld gauges
• Dimensional measurement and alignment verification
• Detailed reporting with photographs and measurements
All visual testing is performed by ASNT Level 2 certified inspectors following ASME, AWS, and API visual acceptance criteria.
Limitations of Visual Testing
Visual testing can only detect surface-breaking discontinuities. It cannot detect subsurface defects. The effectiveness depends on:
• Proper lighting and surface cleanliness
• Inspector training and visual acuity
• Access to the test surface
• Size and orientation of discontinuities
For these reasons, visual testing is often combined with other NDT methods such as dye penetrant testing or magnetic particle testing.
